CARBON AND ITS COMPOUNDS
INTEXT QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
NCERT INTEXT QUESTIONS (PAGE NO. 61)
Q.01:- What would be the electron dot structure of carbon dioxide which has the formula CO2?
Ans:-
Q.02:- What would be the electron dot structure of a molecule of sulphur which is made up of eight atoms of sulphur?
[ Hint:- The eight atoms of sulphur are joined together in the form of a ring.]
Ans:-
NCERT INTEXT QUESTIONS (PAGE NO. 68-69)
Q.01:- How many structural isomers can you draw for pentane?
OR
Draw an isomer of the following compound.
Ans:- Three structural isomers of pentane are :-
Q.02:- What are the two properties of carbon which lead to the huge number of carbon compounds we see around us?
Ans:- (ⅰ) Tetravalency
(ⅱ) Catenation.
Q.03:- What will be the formula and electron dot structure of cyclopentane?
Ans:- C5H10
Cyclopentane
Q.04:- Draw the structure for the following compounds:-
(ⅰ) Ethanoic Acid
(ⅱ) Bromopentane*
(ⅲ) Butane
(ⅳ) Hexanal.
Ans:-
Structural isomers for bromopentane :- There are three structural isomers for bromopentane depending on the position of Br at carbon 1,2,3. Position 4 and 5 are same as 1,2.
*Are structural isomers possible for bromopentane?
Q.05:- How would you name the following compounds ?
Ans:- (ⅰ) Bromoethane
(ⅱ) Methanal
(ⅲ) 1, Hexyne.
NCERT INTEXT QUESTIONS (PAGE NO. 71)
Q.01:- Why is the conversion of ethanol to ethanoic acid an oxidation reaction?
Ans:- Conversion of ethanol to ethanoic acid is oxidation because
(ⅰ) Oxygen is added up to ethanol by oxidising agent like alkaline potassium permanganate or acidified potassium dichromate.
(ⅱ) The product of the reaction is not CO2 and water. Further no heat or light is produced.
Q.02:- A mixture of oxygen and ethyne is burnt for welding. Can you tell why a mixture of ethyne and air is not used?
Ans:- Ethyne with oxygen gives enough heat that can be used for welding whereas if it is burnt in air which contains nitrogen and other inactive gaseous contents, sufficient oxygen is not available for burning ethyne to give the required heat.
NCERT INTEXT QUESTIONS (PAGE NO. 74)
Q.01:- How would you distinguish experimentally between an alcohol and a carboxylic acid?
Ans:-
| SL No. | Test | Alcohol | Carboxylic acid | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Litmus test | No change in color | Blue lithmus solution turns red | |
| 2 | Sodium carbonate | No action | Brisk effervescence is produced | |
| 3 | Sodium metal test | H2 is given out with effervescence | H2 is produced but no effervescence |
Q.01:- Would you be able to check if water is hard by using a detergent ?
Ans:- No, because detergent is equally effective in hard water as well as soft water.
Q.02:- People use a variety of methods to wash cloths. Usually after adding the soap, they 'beat' the cloths on a stone, or beat it with a paddle, scrub with a brush or the mixture is agitated in a washing machine. Why is agitation necessary to get clean clothes?
Ans:- Soap is able to remove dirt from clothes only in thin layers. Therefore, agitation or some similar activity is necessary so that total dirt is removed in layers of micelles on continuous agitation and washing.
